What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship, guided by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

It is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.

After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, a qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, clients’ abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives.

Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people’s motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.

The Hearts in Harmony Philosophy

Music Therapy Works

Music can serve as an effective and lasting form of therapy.

Through music we are able to treat clients holistically: we use music to address a broad spectrum of non-musical goals, including but not limited to motor/physical, communication, social/emotional, cognitive/academic, and sensory.

Who May Benefit

Music therapy provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Music therapy can provide an emotional outlet and emotional support; it also increases motivation and can assist in facilitating movement or physical rehabilitation.

A background in music is NOT a prerequisite for successful participation in music therapy.

We look forward to serving our community.

Our Approach

Music therapy sessions involve passive and active engagement through instrument play, singing, listening, movement, and musical creation.

Therapy services are person-centered and integrative; we use music to fuel our clients’ inner flames, that they may grow and deepen their connection to the world around them.

Therapy goals are based on assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing treatment monitoring and evaluation.
